Nathaniel Parker Willis
Happy Birthday, Nathaniel Parker Willis,
born 20 January 1806, died 20 January 1867
Willis was an American author, poet and editor who worked with writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He became the highest-paid magazine writer of his day.
Quotes by him:
1. The value of life deepens incalculably with the privileges of travel.
2. He who binds his soul to knowledge, steals the key of heaven.
3. In comparing men and books, one must always remember this important
distinction,—that one can put the books down at anytime. As Macaulay
says, 'Plato is never sullen, Cervantes is never petulant, Demosthenes
never comes unseasonably, Dante never stays too long.'

William Shakespeare's 450th Birthday Celebration
In 2014, the birthday celebrations will mark the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth.
Due to the importance of the event, special celebrations will be held
in Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday 26 April and Sunday 27 April.
Further details will be available nearer the time.
Current News - Muscat Festival
It’s that time of year again. The Muscat Festival is back. In two weeks, the much-anticipated annual extravaganza will be getting ready to entertain the city. The countdown has begun with the opening day set for January 23 (a Thursday), continuing until February 22.
Amerat Public Park will remain the main venue, along with Al Naseem
Gardens. Both sites have been closed to the public already to allow for
preparations to get underway. Qurum’s City Ampitheatre and Al Seeb will also play host to some activities, including on the beach. Last year’s Festival attracted over 1.6 million visitors, with
900,000 of these flocking to Amerat. This was a 20 per cent increase on
2012’s event attendance – and organisers hope that this year will beat
these figures. Visitors travel from the Gulf and Middle Eastern states to attend.
More fun and entertainment are being lined up for 2014. The Oman
Heritage & Cultural Village – a big favourite last year – returns,
and organisers are also promising fun fairs, children’s shows, acrobats,
firework displays and folk dancing and singing. Another highlight from last year, the Tour of Oman, a six-stage
cycling event over 935km through some of the country’s most spectacular
scenery, will also be back. Tour de France champions Sir Bradley Wiggins
and Chris Froome both took part in the last race, among more than 100
cyclists. Now one of the key events in Oman’s social calendar – along with
Muscat Fashion Week – the Muscat Festival was first held in 1998.

An Angel In Summer
One day on my way I found thee,
Under the branches of a blooming tree
White petals lay around thy head,
“Why angel hadst thou from heaven fled?”
My feet stood rooted to the spot,
Aye, move further I could not
So I watched thy sleeping silhouette,
Whilst my heart silently bled
Under the branches of a blooming tree
White petals lay around thy head,
“Why angel hadst thou from heaven fled?”
My feet stood rooted to the spot,
Aye, move further I could not
So I watched thy sleeping silhouette,
Whilst my heart silently bled
Thy beauty was not mine to own,
Back to heaven it has flown
All that stayed is thy memory,
Be assured: I’ll never forget thee!
Back to heaven it has flown
All that stayed is thy memory,
Be assured: I’ll never forget thee!
