Happy Birthday, Nathaniel Parker Willis,
born 20 January 1806, died 20 January 1867
Willis was an American author, poet and editor who worked with writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He became the highest-paid magazine writer of his day.
Quotes by him:
1. The value of life deepens incalculably with the privileges of travel.
2. He who binds his soul to knowledge, steals the key of heaven.
3. In comparing men and books, one must always remember this important
distinction,—that one can put the books down at anytime. As Macaulay
says, 'Plato is never sullen, Cervantes is never petulant, Demosthenes
never comes unseasonably, Dante never stays too long.'
